ALJAZEERA explains, "The frontier barrier, which includes a six-metre-wide trench, so far runs for 20km north from the area around the border town of al-Qaim, which Iraqi forces retook from ISIL in November." Impressed? Don't be.
PRESS TV quotes Anwar Hamid Nayerf explaining, "Ten days ago we started to set up a barbed wire security fence with surveillance towers along the border with Syria."
Wow. Barbed wire.
Could we be less impressed?

As any ranch owner in the US knows . . . barbed wire can't even keep in cattle. All it takes is one cow scratching its back on the fence and, the next thing you know, they're all out of the fence.
Karzan Sulaivany (KURDISTAN 24) quotes Major General Hamid Abdullah Ibrahim stating, "Neither infiltrators nor smugglers nor terrorists will penetrate our borders in the future."
Right, because no one's ever managed to avoid a thermal camera before. Certainly not in Afghanistan where the Taliban's been very adept at adopting various strategies -- some as simple as the use of wool blankets. And, for a really big movement operation, no one would ever, for example, think of using fire as a cover. Nor would they ever, I'm so very sure, think, "Hmm, there must be blind spots here. Let's figure out what they are."
The gross waste of Iraqi money is matched only by the gross stupidity.
And, am I mistaken, or don't these on the ground thermal monitors use a lot of power? Don't they require frequent new batteries and frequent replacement? No chance of a security slip up there.
