Fatma Begum: A pioneer of Indian cinema | Feminism In India

From Reema Kagti to Nandita Das - Indian cinema today has many women directors changing the way how films are made and consumed. But do you know about the first woman who blazed the trail for many more women in Indian cinema to come? It was none other than Fatma Begum, the first female director of Indian cinema.

Fatma Begum had begun her career in the theatre, staging Urdu plays. In 1922, she shifted to the silver screen and made her directorial debut with the silent film Veer Abhimanyu. She went to direct many more films such Bulbul-ae-Paristan (1926), Goddess of Love (1927), Heer Ranjha (1928), Chandrawali (1928), Shakuntala (1929) Initially, Fatma had worked with filmmakers like Ardeshir Irani and Nanubhai Desai and for studios such as the Imperial and Kohinoor studios. In 1926, she created her own production company- called Fatma Films, which was later changed to Victoria Fatma Films in 1928. This was yet another groundbreaking first by Fatma - as she was the first Indian woman to start her own film production company. To know more about this icon watch this video!
