Friend, we’re officially one month away from the end of the student loan moratorium, and as of right now, things aren’t looking good. Recent reports are saying that President Biden is looking at canceling $10K in debt per borrower and extending the student loan moratorium—but as of right now, we’re not seeing a lot of movement on either front. The truth is, student loan payments have been paused for two years and in that time it’s been clear: A pause isn’t enough. President Biden can and should cancel ALL student loan debt. Student loan debt is an issue that impacts Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities the hardest. Not only do Black student borrowers have the highest average number of student loan debt at $35K+, but we are also more likely to see our debt INCREASE after graduation compared to white borrowers. We can’t sit on our hands and wait for the Biden administration to do the right thing and take action on student debt. Hip Hop Caucus is using the power of grassroots advocacy to send a message that the time for student debt cancellation is now. We’ve held rallies, signed petitions, and called on this administration to follow through on its promise.
