Over 3 years now counts as 'rapid'

Iraq's military fully reclaims city of Tal Afar from the Islamic State on Sunday in a rapid campaign.

Rapid campaign?

Tal Afar was seized over three years ago.

Rapid?

The Iraqi government couldn't get its act together until it had help from multiple countries.

And it needed that help despite Tal Afar having only an estimated 1000 Islamic State fighters in the town.  (40,000 Iraqi troops -- along with foreign fighters -- were dispatched to take out the 1,000.)

Seth J. Frantzman (JERUSALEM POST) reports, "There still remain areas north of the city to be retaken."  He notes the Iraqi military estimates they encountered maybe 20 Islamic State fighters and that there are rumors ISIS was allowed to depart to avoid injury to Turkmen in order to avoid angering the Turkish government.
