Dear Common Ills, I remember clearly that exciting March day nearly 50 years ago when I watched the US Senate pass the Equal Rights Amendment and send it to the states to be ratified. Since then, you and I have worked so hard. And our persistence has paid off. Virginia was the 38th state to ratify the ERA last year. That means the time is NOW to make sure the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is finally placed — where it belongs — in the U.S. Constitution. The US House of Representatives will be voting as early as next week — voice your strongest possible support for the ERA right now. We must demand removal of the arbitrary timeline! In these first 100 days of the Biden-Harris administration, during Women’s History Month, we have a real opportunity to make history and FINALLY secure lasting change. But we need your help. You see, back in 1972, Congress added an arbitrary timeline to the preamble of the ERA. Congress changed it once before — they can change it again. Common Ills, I don’t have to tell you there is no time limit on equality. It has been nearly 100 years of struggle for the Equal Rights Amendment. Let’s get this done. While there is bipartisan support, you know as well as I that there are zealots and corporate interests determined to stop the Equal Rights Amendment. Make no mistake. The days of discriminating on the basis of gender must come to an end. To make this happen we need your active support. The time is now. This Women’s History Month, let’s do something historic together. Let’s get this done. Thanks for being an invaluable member of the movement for gender equality. For equality, PS: I know you’ve been a staunch advocate for equality. I need you to take action again now. To tell your friends and share with your social networks. Massive public pressure will help get the job done. Can I count on you? |
