While all of us have grown up listening to the tales of beautiful damsels, chivalrous princes, love at first sight and happily ever afters, fairytales have continued to promote prejudicial ideologies through the ages. Whether it’s the ‘fair and lovely’ beauty of the damsels in distress, the saviour complex of the knights in shining armour or the wickedness of the ‘bad women’ in a red lipstick, these stories unapologetically propagate traditional stereotypes. These stories can have a toxic impact on the minds of young kids as the world of fairytales lies far from reality.
As fairytales play a major role in impacting the young minds, we dug deeper to find out how these stories leave an imprint on their personalities and ideologies. Be it overlooking female agency, dichotomising between a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ woman or simply screaming out that key to a woman’s happiness is marriage, we’ve grown up listening to tales of damsels in distress and knights in shining armour. While these are some of the ways fairytales are problematic, we are here with a carriage full of numerous more examples to prove there is no such thing as a “Happily Ever After” we all have grown up believing!
