Iraq

Little Jared Keyel's posting his bad article all over the place so why not the LA PROGRESSIVE as well -- a publication that has no fixed position on anything and was offering neocon arguments on this war to justify voting for Joe Biden mere months ago.

Keyel arguing yet again for reparations yet appears completely unaware that the US-created and imposed government in Iraq is corrupt.  Apparently, he's never heard of Transparency International or its rankings on corruption.  Again, his plan will not help the Iraqi people but that's not really the point, is it?  He just wants to buy off some guilt.

Does Little Jared not grasp the reality that is Iraq today?  Sura Ali (RUDAW) reports:

Iraqi security forces arrested journalist and lawyer Ibrahim al-Sumaida'i late on Friday, acting on an arrest warrant on the charge of "publicly insulting public authorities" issued by the Al-Karkh Investigation Court in Baghdad.

The warrant was issued following “his attack on official institutions, describing them with bad words (which are not appropriate to mention) that go beyond the limits of the freedom of expression," according to a statement from the Supreme Judicial Council on Saturday.

The statement also accused Sumaida'i of being paid for his attacks on public institutions.

The law Sumaida'i is charged under, Article 226 of the Iraqi Penal Code, states that "Any person who publicly insults the National Assembly, government, courts, armed forces, public authorities, official or semi-official departments, or statutory bodies shall be punished with imprisonment for a period not exceeding seven years or a fine or both."

Sumaida'i is a political analyst known for his outspoken views and opposition to the government of Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

His arrest was criticized by the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights, which expressed "grave concern" that the warrant was issued without regard for humanitarian and legal guarantees. It is a "flagrant violation of human rights," the commission stated, calling for Sumaida'i’s immediate release.

Yahya al-Kubaisi.  As Mohammed Tawfeeq reports in a CNN syndicated article, two have arrest warrants.  Yahya al-Kubaisi is the second one:

Political analysts Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie and Yahya al-Kubaisi were respectively accused of publicly "insulting" and "defaming" public authorities, according to copies of the warrants obtained by CNN and the media office of the Supreme Judicial Council.

The warrants were issued on March 16 and are based on a 1969 penal code which has been previously criticized by human rights groups for impinging on freedom of speech.

The war and the violence continue.  Iran's MEHR NEWS AGENCY reports:

As Shafaq News reported, a bomb exploded as a US coalition logistics convoy passed on the Babil Highway in central Iraq on Sunday.

No casualties or damage have been reported yet.

Iraqi sources reported on late Saturday that a US military logistics convoy was targeted in the Iraqi province of Saladin.

According to the report, 'International Resistance Group' claimed responsibility for the attack. The group said it had targeted the convoy of US military equipment with anti-tank bombs near Al-Awja.

Last week, nearly ten convoys, mostly carrying equipment for the US military or the international coalition were targeted.
