Delhi High Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing on the petition of former Union minister MJ Akbar challenging a trial court order which had dismissed the criminal defamation case filed by him against journalist Priya Ramani over the allegations of sexual harassment. Ramani was the first woman to accuse Akbar of sexual harassment during the #MeToo campaign. The allegations levelled against him forced him to resign from the Union Cabinet on October 17, 2018. A trial court had earlier acquitted Ramani in the defamation case. All caste-based reservations may go and only those meant for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) may remain, the Supreme Court said on Thursday even as it clarified that it was a radical idea and a policy matter to be decided by the government and Parliament. On the ninth day of hearing on revising the 1992 Mandal case, advocate Shriram P Pingle submitted before a five-judge Constitution Bench led by Justice Ashok Bhushan on behalf of SCBC Welfare Association that an endeavour should be made to remove caste-based reservations in a phased manner because the issue was getting politicised. A schoolgirl who had written an Insta post last May, in the wake of #Bois-LockerRoom revelations on social media, about an incident of alleged sexual harassment by an ex-classmate will face trial for abetment to suicide at a juvenile court, where police on Wednesday filed a chargesheet against her and another teen, reports Times of India. Following the social media post, the Class 12 student accused of harassment died by suicide in Gurugram. Both the teens have taken anticipatory bail. The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Indian Army and Indian Navy to consider the grant of the permanent commission for eligible women officers, who were excluded on the ground of fitness standards. The SC has directed the Army to consider the grant of the permanent commission for women officers within a month and allow PC within two months after following the due process.
