Ongoing violence in Iraq

Like the war, the violence never ends in Iraq.  Another attack in Iraq on a base with US forces.  ANI notes, "Two rockets targeted an airbase at Iraq's Baghdad airport housing US-led coalition troops on Sunday. This was the second such attack in ten days, the Iraqi army said, reported The US Posts."  Sura Ali (RUDAW) reports, "Iraqi Security Forces managed to destroy one of the rockets before it reached the airport, which hosts US troops, the media cell told state media. No casualties have been reported. The attack is the latest of several attacks on Iraqi bases in recent weeks."  AFP provides this context, "Almost 30 rocket or bomb attacks have targeted American interests in Iraq -- including troops, the embassy or Iraqi supply convoys to foreign forces -- since President Joe Biden took office in January."

Staying on the topic of violence, MNA reports, "A security source in Iraq reported on Sunday that two explosions occurred on the route of two US military logistics convoys in the provinces of Babil and Muthanna" and MENAFN reports, "On Saturday, May. 1 the Iraqi military stated that an overnight assault by extremist Islamic State (IS) rebels north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, left four soldiers as a minimum dead."

AHVAL NEWS reports:

The Security and Defence Committee of the Iraqi Parliament announced on Saturday that it will hold an extraordinary meeting in reaction to Turkey’s decision to establish a military base in northern Iraq.

Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu announced on April 30 that Turkey will establish a military base in Metina, a mountainous area close to the Turkish border in northern Iraq.

Badr al-Ziyadi, a member of the Parliamentary Defence and Security Committee, said Turkey's advance on Iraqi soil was “a clear violation of the country's sovereignty”.

The committee will hold an extraordinary meeting on Soylu’s remarks on the proposed military base, al-Ziyadi said."

Also on violence, Iraq's President Barham Salih Tweets:

ISIS attacked Iraqi Army, Peshmerga, Hashd posts in Baghdad, Kirkuk, Diyala. We cannot afford to be complacent as terrorists’ threat remains potent. We must be united in support of Iraqi armed forces, maintain effective International support to eradicate terror across the region.

Meanwhile WION notes, "A manhunt is underway and security officers are combing areas near the prison."  21 prisoners escaped from a prison in al-Muthanna Province.  Khazan Jangiz  (RUDAW) reports the hunt has turned up 9 escapees and "The governor has ordered the arrest of prison officials and an investigation to determine whether the reason behind the escape was 'negligence or deliberate'."

We'll close with this from Margaret Kimberley's latest column at BLACK AGENDA REPORT:

The focus on modern day lynch law at the expense of other issues not only hasn’t ended this scourge but it has given scoundrels an entree to practice their con games against Black people. After Floyd was murdered every hustler from Al Sharpton to Nancy Pelosi jumped on the bandwagon to voice fake outrage. Sharpton gives cover to the establishment and protects them like an old school gangster while pretending to fight for the people. As he famously told Joe Biden in a leaked video, “I will never embarrass you.”

Pelosi and Democratic politicians made a mockery of a serious issue with their kente cloth, taking a knee stunt. One would think she couldn’t do any worse but she did. On the day of the verdict she opined that Floyd, “Sacrificed himself for justice.” Pelosi gets away with these insults because Black politics consists of the bottom feeding misleaders who owe their positions to her largesse.

The issues are larger than most of us are willing to admit. The changes needed are fundamental to a country which puts anti-black racism at the center of politics, law and economics. The system demands that Black people be locked up, displaced, red lined, and prevented from having full citizenship rights. Police killings are just one manifestation of a fundamentally unjust nation.
