"We have had abortions."

MORE THAN A MAGAZINE, A MOVEMENT

Dear Common Ills,

January 22 marks the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. But it may very well be its last. In a few short months we face the likelihood the Supreme Court will overturn Roe, endangering abortion access nationwide.

Before Roe, illegal abortions were causing untold suffering in the United States, especially for poor women who had to resort to unsafe self-induced or back-alley abortions. Even then, to many it seemed absurd that the government could deny a woman sovereignty over her own body. It is even more absurd in 2022 that in Texas — for the vast majority of women and girls — abortion has already been virtually outlawed. And a myriad of restrictions limit access to abortion in the U.S. for young women, women in the military and poor women, disproportionately impacting women of color.

In the Winter issue of Ms., we delve deep into the current state of abortion access and rights in America. We also examine how to ensure that our rights are protected — reminding you that without the Equal Rights Amendment, women still do not have full constitutional equality!

Here’s a glimpse at what else you’ll find inside the upcoming winter issue:

  • We make the case that abortion is essential to democracy. A new series from Ms. in collaboration with the Brennan Center for Justice, examines the profound connections between abortion rights and the state of our democracy — and how we can’t have one without the other.
  • Along with rising rates of abortion bans across the country comes rising animus from the anti-abortion movement — a sentiment that too often turns into violence. Our new issue goes deep on a profoundly American form of terrorism — violence at the abortion clinic.
  • And, we launch a revival of a historic Ms. campaign that brought national attention when it first ran in 1972. WE HAVE HAD ABORTIONS — a bold petition in which 53 well-known U.S. women declared that they had undergone abortions — despite laws in most states rendering the procedure illegal. It’s time to speak out again.
