Every day, our lives and decisions are impacted by the algorithms of artificial intelligence (AI). Sometimes we’re aware of this, and sometimes we are not.

On Sept. 26, Dr. Rumman Chowdhury will share the social implications of AI built on biased information as well as her ideas on how communities can be a part of developing and using AI to improve equity and mobility for all.

Her talk will be the third in a quarterly series of conversations looking at the Future of Information, sponsored by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

She will be speaking at The Henry Ford’s Anderson Theater,  20900 Oakwood in Dearborn, beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required.
Detroit Public TV will also be live-streaming the event at dptv.org/future of information

Dr. Chowdhury’s passion lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence and humanity. She holds degrees in quantitative social science and has been a practicing data scientist and AI developer since 2013. She is currently the Global Lead for Responsible AI at Accenture Applied Intelligence, where she creates technical solutions for ethical, explainable and transparent AI.

She is a TedX speaker and a Forbes Tech contributing author. She has been named by InformationWeek as one of 10 influential AI and machine learning experts to follow on Twitter. She was also cited as one of BBC’s 100 Women for 2017, recognized as one of the Bay Area’s top 40 under 40 and inducted into the British Royal Society of the Arts.

Following Dr. Chowdhury’s talk, a panel of local experts will react to her ideas:

·        Diana Nucera, aka Mother Cyborg, is an artist, educator and community organizer who explores innovative technology with communities most impacted by the digital divide. In 2009 she co-founded the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition.

·        John Kwant leads Ford’s global efforts to partner with municipalities to identify urban mobility needs that inform its development of new mobility services, while working to create, pilot and implement new mobility solutions.

·        Moderator Christy McDonald is the anchor, moderator and managing editor of Detroit Public TV’s One Detroit initiative.  She also anchors special coverage for DPTV, including documentaries, events and the Mackinac Policy Conference.

The previous lecture in this series was by danah boyd, who focused on addressing social and cultural inequities by understanding the relationship between technology and society. Her presentation can be viewed here.
