We’re so proud these women have brought home the national title,” Senator Cantwell said. “This season the Storm came together for a memorable title run that made Washingtonians proud. Their teamwork leadership, and camaraderie is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together.”
“It is an honor to recognize our hometown basketball heroes, the Seattle Storm, on their successful season and outstanding achievement in this year’s WNBA finals. From the hard-earned efforts of the entire Storm roster, including superstars Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart, and the coaches, health professionals, and staff that make the Storm organization so successful, to their unapologetic support for important causes impacting women and girls, the Storm have cemented their legacy as one of the premier teams in the league while providing a strong model of how professional athletes can win while also living their commitments to their values on and off the court,” Senator Murray said. “Young girls—and boys—in Washington state and around the nation will continue to be inspired by the Storm’s excellence, and I’m thrilled to recognize their impressive achievements in Congress as we welcome home another championship trophy.”
On top of their finals victory, the Seattle Storm’s winning season and championship also brought recognition for several of their players, including power forward Breanna Stewart, who was named Most Valuable Player for both the 2018 WNBA regular season and 2018 WNBA finals, and veteran Storm point guard Sue Bird, who this year set the WNBA career record for number of games played. In addition to their athletic achievements, members of the Seattle Storm organization have also stood out for their efforts to promote civic engagement and support for the LGBTQ community, as well as their advocacy on behalf of women and girls—including support for the #MeToo movement, and becoming the first franchise in WNBA history to host a night in support of Planned Parenthood.

Resolution honors franchise’s third national championship, contributions to Washington state, and advocacy for women & girls
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following the Seattle Storm’s victory over the Washington Mystics to become the Women’s National Basketball Association’s (WNBA) 2018 champions last month, U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Patty Murray (D-WA) today introduced a resolution (S. Res. 677) honoring the Seattle Storm on their successful season and championship triumph. The Seattle Storm, who finished the regular season as the top seed in the league with a record of 26-8, defeated the Mystics in a three-game sweep during the 2018 WNBA finals.
