Friend,
I pray that you and your loved ones are staying healthy and safe during this COVID-19 pandemic.
The saying goes, when America gets a cold, our folks get the flu. Our communities are being hit the hardest by COVID-19, particularly in hotspots like Detroit, New Orleans, Chicago, and New York. In all these cities there are extreme intersections of poverty, pollution, and structural racism, and that’s why our communities disproportionately have lung disease, heart disease, and diabetes, which are pre-existing conditions that make people particularly vulnerable to COVID-19.
We know what it means when government waits to respond to a crisis. Hurricane Katrina, 15 years ago, was Hip Hop Caucus’ wake up call to the impact on our communities of government inaction during a crisis. Today we released this 2 minute video – the first in our April Earth Month series – about organizing for Hurricane Katrina recovery.
We see the terrible consequences of those who denied warnings of the COVID-19 crisis. We can’t afford denial of another crisis. That’s why we’re asking you to act today, and commit to vote for climate justice this November.
Elected leaders in government have been ignoring the reality of climate change for decades. It’s our communities who have the most at stake. The climate crisis and COVID-19 are inextricably linked.
We need leaders at every level of government who can handle crises and prioritize solutions that protect everyone equitably. We must elect leaders who will get us off our current 10 year collision course with climate disaster, which will increase the spread of infectious disease across the globe, and protect our public health first and foremost.
