2020 stands to be one of the most important Presidential elections in the history of this country. And because of the pandemic, which continues to kill 1,000 people every day, the safest way to cast a vote will be to vote by mail. And so long as the USPS is compromised, our elections are compromised too.
Trump’s crony, Louis DeJoy, may be the first Postmaster General in the organization’s two hundred years to be hired for the express objective of dismantling the very organization he was tasked with protecting. The multimillionaire UPS shareholder has a DIRECT financial interest in doing what he’s done--slowing the mail to a screeching halt. He was hired for the express motive of dismantling the Postal Service and--as a consequence--the election. It is time he was FIRED.
Black people have long struggled to exercise our right to vote in this country. For four hundred years, Black people have struggled against chattel slavery, state sanctioned torture, and fierce material and structural violence. They keep the vote from us, they know that when Black people vote, white supremists lose. When Black people vote, justice wins.
So long as Louis DeJoy remains in charge of the USPS, Black people--and all people--have no secure way to vote in one of the most important Presidential elections in the history of this nation and world.
