The Biden administration has the power to change this country forever in a profound and powerful way-- by cancelling student loan debt, the Biden administration would not only be helping 45 million middle class families1 stabilize in the middle of an economic recession. He would be taking a powerful step toward closing aggressive racial and gender wealth gaps which have been cruelly reinforced by Black families’ advancement in higher education.2
Tell the Biden administration: Cancel student loan debt on Day 1!
Black women are some of the most educated people in America,3 and yet their student loan debt is disproportionately high, with higher interest rates and more predatory loans that commodify their socioeconomic exclusion.4 A country which punishes people for striving to educate and better themselves has no right to call itself open to the pursuit of happiness.
In the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King:
“I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.”
Black voters turned out in record numbers for the November 3rd election- now it’s time for the Biden administration to show up for our communities.
