TODAY

Have you gotten around to watching any of this year’s Best Picture nominees? Just one or two of them? This has been a challenging year for movies and moviegoers alike. That’s a wild contrast to the world of audio. So why not cater to that longing for the screen from the comfort of your own ears? The list of available podcasts has grown significantly, but we’ve cut through the noise – here’s a curated collection of great ones to listen to right now.

The Latest and Greatest

The fast-paced world of Hollywood has an ever changing backdrop of events. Whether it’s the upcoming award season, or just simple industry news, the following podcasts will explain everything that is needed to know in that respect.

Award Season in Full Swing

Great movies are meant to be celebrated, and what better way to celebrate them than by awarding them? Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast covers movies fit for an Oscar. From reactions to nominations, to speculations about potential best film winners, the podcast covers a wide variety of topics. The latest episode has the two hosts, Clarissa Cruz and Joshua Rothkopf, revisiting the Best Support Actress category nominations and who will win big.

The Review

Unsure of what a movie is going to be like, and need a review before watching? The Big Picture is just the podcast for you. Hosts Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins review big films, providing insight into their creation and craft, and of course whether or not they are worth watching. The podcast, created by The Ringer, also covers upcoming films, top lists, and discussions on filmmaking. Recent episodes discussed trailers shown during the superbowl, Micahel Mann’s Ferrari, and Oscar nominations.

Actors on Movies

Breaking down films and what makes them great is precisely what actor Paul Scheer and film critic Amy Nicholson do in their podcast Unspooled. Originally started as a show that covers AFI’s top 100 films, the podcast has shifted to the discussion of film series, and what makes them great. The latest episode covers the Jackass series of films, what makes them interesting, the stunts, the gags, and everything gross is on full display in this hour and a half long episode. Each installment is carefully explained and cataloged, while the two hosts provide reactions to major scenes in each movie. It’s a shame Scheer doesn’t have a role in these films with the amount of praise he gives them.

Hard News for Hollywood

Sometimes all that is needed is a breakdown of specific topics related to Hollywood. Want to listen to the Oscars stance on the vaccine requirement? Want to know about the details of the Olympics streaming on Peacock, or what future Disney’s new board chair brings to the media company? KCRW’s Hollywood Breakdown has all your Hollywood insider news. Hosted by Kim Masters and Matthew Belloni, the podcast goes into great detail about behind the scenes newsworthy topics in the film world.

Podcasts for Film-related Storytelling

The Rat Pack

History is easily forgotten, and if it isn’t preserved it is at risk of being forgotten forever. This is the premise of the podcast You Must Remember This, a show dedicated to remembering and discussing Hollywood’s often forgotten history. Hosted by Karian Longworth, founder of Cinematical.com, the show chronicles noteworthy stories of Hollywood’s colorful history during the beginning days of cinema. The current series details the trials and tribulations of Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, their rise and fall and the cast of characters they meet along the way.

Everybody Loves Lucy

Ever wanted to know the story of Lucille Ball? Ben Mankiewicz’s current season of his podcast, The Plot Thickens, is a deep dive into the public and private life of the famous television star. Recent episodes include interviews with actors such as J.K. Simmons, Carol Burnett, Kate Flannery, and Kate Micucci on how Lucille Ball influenced them. Previous seasons also discussed other well known stars in this story-driven, Turner Classic Movie production podcast.

Revisiting Classics

Some movies you just can’t get enough of. That doesn’t mean they’re great art. Or even classic “so bad they’re good” flicks. It just means that no matter how many times they cross your screen, you invariably stop ... and stay. The Rewatchables podcast, hosted by pop culture and sports superfan Bill Simmons on his Ringer Podcast Network, is a tribute to these sticky cult classics. From Parenthood and Ordinary People to Casino, these flicks might not engage serious film students. But they are the ones you and your friends will obsess over for beers — err, years — to come.

Podcasts for Film Students

Film Analysis 101

Keeping up on the current list of films and television can be tough, but thankfully there is a podcast to help. The Watch is a podcast put on by The Ringer’s Andy Greewald and Chris Ryan who talk about all the recent films and tv shows. In a recent episode they talked about the new Trailer for Doctor Strange and the upcoming film about Lord of the Rings. Previous episodes had them discuss The Book of Boba Fett, another installment in Disney’s long line of the Star Wars franchise. Geeking out has never been so cool.

The Script Doesn’t Write Itself

Screenwriters John August and Craig Mazin host a podcast dedicated to the art of scriptwriting. The Scriptnotes podcast is for any aspiring writer who wants to get into the scene. From discussions about getting your work seen, to how copyright law works, to even the behind scenes look into filmmaking, the hosts cover a wide variety of topics. One recent episode includes a discussion with Mike Shur, a writer who has worked on The Office and Parks and Recreation. Other episodes include talks about adapting screenplays, how to strengthen your lead character, and tips to not overthink the process. With analysis of recent award winning scripts, this podcast is perfect for any aspiring scriptwriter or scriptwriting appreciator.

The Cutting Room Floor

The world of filmmaking has many ins and outs. There is work to be done both in front of and behind the camera. No Film School’s podcast is just what every aspiring filmmaker or enthusiast should listen to get an idea of what the work behind the camera is like. Simply titled The No Film School Podcast, each episode is a hyper-focused account of various aspects of the craft, and interviews with filmmakers that describe how they create. A recent episode sits down with Peter Sciberras, who talks about his recent film, The Power of the Dog. He goes over how he edited the film, how he respects his audience, and how to capture the actor’s portrayal of characters.
