Greetings fellow Bioneers!
Whether you're watching a live performance or strolling through a gallery adorned with paintings and sculptures, artists have an incredible way of eliciting emotional responses that can be transformational. At Bioneers, we highlight arts for social change, summed up nicely by a line attributed to Bertolt Brecht, "Art is not a mirror for reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.” In this week's newsletter, you'll get a sneak peek at the artists who will be featured at the 2018 Bioneers Conference and hear from musicians, painters, and spoken word performers who are creating powerful art with the goal of raising awareness, sharing truths, and changing the world.

Person to Know: Lisa Ericson
Painter Lisa Ericson has been described as “a multi-hyphenate, utilizing her visual talents as an artist, illustrator, and designer to craft meaningful images.” Ericson’s artwork can be described as a sort of magical realism that manages to be simultaneously hyper-realistic and wildly imaginative. Through her paintings, she hopes to bring awareness to environmental issues, including the bleaching of the Great Coral Reef. Ericson's painting, Terrarium II, which is part of a series of paintings displaying different species of turtles carrying collections of ecosystems on their backs, is the featured image for the 2018 Bioneers Conference. Read an interview with Ericson and see more of her work at Bioneers.

Carbon Farming Feature: Meeting Climate Goals
In 2016, Elly Brown, Director of the San Diego Food System Alliance and Dr. Puja Batra of Batra Ecological Strategies met at the Montado Ranch in San Diego where the Marin Carbon Project was putting in a test plot to see how compost applications on Southern California soils could sequester carbon from the atmosphere. It was then that Elly and Puja began a conversation about the opportunity for agriculture to play a significant role in meeting county climate action targets. That conversation developed into a partnership to develop a strategy linking climate action to carbon farming. Read more about the pair’s work to implement carbon farming as a means to help San Diego meet its climate goals in this transcribed talk.
