Tomorrow’s Kevin’s Song brings the community together to explore the complex causes, innovative solutions and what we all can do to help those at risk of suicide
Detroit Public TV will livestream key sessions tomorrow at dptv.org/saving-lives
starting at 9 a.m.
Unfortunately, there are few people whose families or communities have not been touched by suicide.
In Michigan, as in the rest of the country, suicide rates are at epidemic level. They have soared in this state by 33 percent in the past 20 years, the increase especially troubling among our youth.
But there are good people working together to raise awareness of the problem and find workable solutions for educators, parents and everyone else who may have contact with individuals dealing with depression or other issues that place them at risk.
The fourth annual Kevin’s Song Conference on Suicide: Advocacy in Action is taking place this Thursday through Saturday at the Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth. It is three days of talks, panels and honest discussion of the crisis and what can be done to help those in need.
Registration for the conference is closed, so strong is the interest and the urgency of the problem.
But Detroit Public TV – in partnership with Kevin’s Song and presenting sponsor, The Children’s Foundation – is livestreaming key sessions and speakers on Friday at dptv.org/saving-lives.
Since 2013, Kevin’s Song, a nonprofit organization, has sought to tackle the challenging problem of suicide by approaching it as a complex phenomenon, from which no group is immune, which must be addressed by a unified and collaborative effort.
This year’s conference will urge a coalition of concerned organizations and individuals to advocate for better education and greater support for suicide prevention. Educators, mental health professionals, parents, students, veterans, policymakers, survivors and other leading voices will share information about suicide, how to help those at risk and the repercussions of suicide at both the personal and community level.
DPTV’s Cynthia Canty will be on location, interviewing knowledgeable and inspiring leaders and panelists during breaks in the School Summit. These conversations, along with highlights from the day, will be presented in an hourlong special on Detroit Public TV on February 10.
It will be the second show in a yearlong campaign by Detroit Public TV, Kevin’s Song and The Children’s Foundation to shine a light of compassion and understanding on an issue that has too long remained in the shadows.
The first program, “Saving Live: Preventing Youth Suicide,” can be viewed on-demand at dptv.org/saving-lives.
