Late, Great (RECORD STORE DAY)

When we lose a favorite musician, their music is a connection point for those who loved and knew them through their songs, and of course for those who loved and knew them as the people behind the music.  Today, record stores started stocking two releases --both covers projects-- that highlight the powerful legacy of two musicians gone too soon:  spotlighting one man's singular voice showcasing one man's remarkable songs.

NO ONE SINGS LIKE YOU ANYMORE... a lyric, a truth, and now an album title. In 2016, CHRIS CORNELL made an album (played the instruments, sang the songs) of covers, choosing songs and artists that inspired him. Now that collection is in record stores, and we hear--in his voice--songs from musicians as diverse as Harry Nilsson, Prince, and Guns N' Roses.   *Lithograph free with purchase, while they last, at participating stores like Cactus in Houston.

Some things run in the family. JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE never missed a chance to meet people and play his music at record stores like Music Millennium, where those two fan interactions above were captured. He may have learned that from his father, who also makes record store visits a priority. That picture up there is Steve Earle at Twist and Shout, and below it is his new album, in stores today. It's called J.T and it's a fairly remarkable thing: less than a year after Justin Townes' death, STEVE EARLE AND THE DUKES have recorded an album of his songs, and added one Steve wrote shortly after his son died. From his debut in 2007, Justin Townes Earle released an EP and eight full length albums. This collection, a father covering a son, a collaboration of sorts, is in record stores now.  100% of the artist royalties and advances from J.T., including the special limited edition red vinyl version at record stores, go to a trust set up for Steve's granddaughter, Justin Townes' three-year-old daughter.
