Dear Friend,
Apple has made a backdoor into your phone ostensibly in the name of protecting children: but in fact, this backdoor would endanger kids in abusive homes, imperil human rights across the world, and trample your privacy rights.
Apple's new update will constantly be scanning photos on your iCloud account, violating end-to-end encryption, and trampling any privacy standards that Apple once purported themselves to be committed to.
On top of scanning all users’ photos, Apple will also be releasing a feature that will use machine learning algorithms, which can often times be inaccurate, to warn parents if their children are sending any photos that contain nudity. This represents a huge risk for LGBTQ+ kids who may be living in homes with unsupportive parents.
This backdoor also calls into question Apple’s commitment to privacy. If a backdoor into your phone exists, it’s not hard to imagine authoritarian regimes taking advantage of that. In fact, that’s happened with other surveillance technology recently.
Child exploitation is a real issue, but Apple’s clumsy "solutions” won’t solve it: in fact, it may put children at risk. Tell Apple this isn’t the answer: sign the petition.
