Welcome to MintCast -- an interview series featuring dissenting voices the establishment would rather silence. I’m your host Mnar Muhawesh Adley.
Within just three months in office amid a global pandemic, the Joe Biden administration recently ordered an airstrike that dropped 1.75 tons of explosives on a town in Syria near the Iraq border. The move is re-inflaming tensions between Washington and Damascus as the war enters its 10th year.
Joining me today to discuss the latest on the ground in Syria is Vanessa Beeley.
Vanessa is an independent British journalist based in Damascus and specializing in Middle Eastern affairs. She is perhaps best known for her coverage of the Syrian Civil War and the Western media propaganda machine drawing up support for a so-called humanitarian war against Syria.

Here’s your wrap of news for the week gone by:
Rajya Sabha passes bill to allow abortion upto 24 weeks on Tuesday. This move seeks to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, by increasing the upper gestation limit from 20 to 24 weeks for special categories of women. According to an article on the Hindustan Times, this category would include survivors of rape, victims of incest, women with disability, and minors. The bill also ensures that women get access to safe and legal abortion services on humanitarian grounds.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court's order in a case of sexual assault -- asking the accused to get "rakhi" tied by the woman to get bail -- was scrapped by the Supreme Court today. The top court agreed with the petitioners that going ahead with the Madhya Pradesh HC’s order would be a “gross trivialization of the trauma suffered by the complainant”. The case was linked to the bail order Vikram Bagri, who was in jail in Ujjain on charges of sexually assaulting a neighbour, and had filed a bail petition in Indore in April 2020. The Supreme Court in fact also issues directions for gender sensitisation of lawyers and judges.
Uttarakhand CM’s remark at a workshop in Dehradun sparked a controversy among people when he expressed that he was shocked to see a woman running an NGO wearing ripped jeans. He was concerned about the example that she was setting in society and said, “If this kind of woman goes out in the society to meet people and solve their problems, what kind of message are we giving out to society, to our kids? It all starts at home.” He expressed his distaste for children showing “bare knees”, and said that while the west is incorporating India’s culture of yoga and wearing covering clothes, “we run towards nudity”. Another minister, Ganesh Joshi, echoed these sentiments and added, “Women talk about all things they want to do in life, but the most important thing for them is to look after their family and children”.
Three Brahmin men assaulted and killed a pregnant woman over use of a handpump in UP's Lakhimpur Kheri, says the victim’s husband Manoj Kashyam. Manoj and Shalu come from the Kahar community, which is included under the Other Backward Classes category. Kashyap called his wife's death a caste crime, however the police refused to categorise it as caste-based violence. The incident took place in October 2020, and Kashyap added that their family was the only one from the Kahar community in the village: "There are 200 families of Brahmins. They are more in number, so they are always domineering. They think that we should work in their house, fill water for them. They are also offended that ‘Manoj doesn’t work in our house.’ I also lived in a suppressed manner due to this.”
The largest ever study conducted on the prevalence of violence against women by WHO and partners reveals that 1 in 3 women in the world experience violence. It said that 1 in 4 young women between the age of 15 to 24 will have experienced violence by a partner if they have been in a relationship, by the time they hit their mid-twenties. WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that violence against women has been exacerbated during the pandemic, “but unlike COVID-19, violence against women cannot be stopped with a vaccine. We can only fight it with deep-rooted and sustained efforts – by governments, communities and individuals – to change harmful attitudes, improve access to opportunities and services for women and girls, and foster healthy and mutually respectful relationships.”

Did you know that even the health outcomes influenced by air pollution
are gendered? And even within the population of women, class and caste
privilege can play a huge role in influencing how air pollution impacts
women's health, especially their pre-natal health. Today, we at FII, in
collaboration with Greenpeace India's #DetoxCity campaign, are talking
pollution, women, pre-natal health, and much more!
Transport is one of the biggest contributors to air pollution in India. Through its #DetoxCity campaign, Greenpeace India aims to encourage commuters to take the pledge to give up their private motorised vehicles for one day every week. How class division amongst Black Americans facilitated housing discrimination.
We will be joined by professor Preston Smith, II
About Dr. Smith:
Postwar black politics with an emphasis on housing and class. Inner-city neighborhood revitalization including economic development, affordable housing, quality public education, and equal and adequate delivery of municipal services
Preston Smith's research interests in urban studies and postwar black politics are reflected in his many publications and presentations. He has been published in such journals as the Journal of Urban History and edited volumes such as Without Justice For All. He has made presentations at Social Science History Association meeting, Center for the Study of Race, Inequality and Politics, Institute for Social Policy Studies, at Yale University, and The Centennial of W.E.B. DuBois’s Souls of Black Folks symposium at Williams College. His most recent book, Racial Democracy and the Black Metropolis: Housing Policy in Postwar Chicago (Univ Of Minnesota Press, 2012) examines housing debates in Chicago that go beyond black and white politics, showing how class and factional conflicts among African Americans actually helped to reproduce stunning segregation along economic lines.
Smith's commitment to urban studies led to his becoming Director of the Community-Based Learning (CBL) program at the Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts. Smith's Involvement with CBL began with his development of an advanced seminar that utilized CBL pedagogy. In this class students interact with local communities through community-based research and service, allowing them to enhance their understanding of public concerns while fostering leadership and advocacy skills.
Smith is part of group who developed a faculty seminar that examines Puerto Rican history and culture in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and on the island. The unique feature of this seminar is that it combines area college faculty and community leaders from Holyoke. It is targeted to faculty and community-based organizations that collaborate on community-university partnerships. Since many of the families living in Holyoke are Puerto Rican, the seminar focuses on educating CBL students on Puerto Rican history and culture.
Smith believes that one of the ways to best teach politics is to be politically engaged. He is a member of the Interim National Council of the Labor Party, an independent political party that comes out of the labor movement. The Debs-Jones-Douglass Institute, which is the educational and cultural arm of the Labor Party, sponsors the Free Public Higher Education campaign. Smith is currently the co-chair of the Institute's national campaign, which asserts that higher education is a necessity in today’s economy and society and, therefore, should be paid for by the federal government. Modeled after the GI Bill®, the campaign would cost $34 billion if everyone currently enrolled at a public institution were to have free tuition and fees. Recuperating the tax cuts that have not benefited working families in this country could pay for this amount.
In addition to his popular community development course, Smith also teaches American Politics; Black Urban Reform; Racial Stratification and Urban Political Economy; and Black and Latino Politics
