First off, does the New York Times want to end up in spam folders? I'm sure I'm not the only one damn tried of these scams of 'help me transfer money' flooding their inboxes. For over six months now, the scammers have been using the "Send Article" option via the New York Times. This is a public account issue. We will not waste my time opening anymore NYT articles sent to the public account, we will assume they're spam and immediately delete them.
Second a few visitors and community members e-mailed about ___ or ___ who has things at Veterans Today (and often elsewhere) and whether they'd still be highlighted? Yes. And we may even highlight them via Veterans Today. But the permalinks automatically list a site title and the most recent article and if you're article is lying that the Iraq War is over, we can't have you on our permalinks.
I can't remember if Jeff Gates is at Veterans Today or not. But he is a writer we've highlighted in the past. We're no longer sending anyone to Gates' own site. Too many of you are getting messages that the site's infected with viruses. I'm sure that's not Gates' doing. But I can't knowingly send someone to a site that's at risk. (That's why we pulled WMC from our permalinks, remember?)
What's the deal with Reuters? At some point last week, I referred to the disaster that is their new site. It's an ongoing nightmare. After I referred to it, they did a happy-talk article. But they've still not fixed things. If an when they do, we'll add them to the permalinks (add their new address, the old one is still there which refers you to the home page of the new site).
"Isaiah worked on Third," West e-mails. "And you were late again. So that means no Isaiah comic?" No. He's got one I've already uploaded it to Flickr but it's "Private" until it goes up here which means you can't see it at Flickr yet. But if you need a quick fix, Jim's uploaded Isaiah's Terry Gross drawing and added it to "Only 17% of the guests were women (Ava, C.I. and Ann)."
The Roger Hodge "Book discussion" of his The Mendacity of Hope: Barack Obama and the Betrayal of American Liberalism. A few things. Charlie e-mailed Saturday about Marcia's boycott of Amazon (for dropping WikiLeaks) and I thought it was clear I did support it. I also know if Charlie's confused then there's a reason for it on my side, an error I've made, because he's a careful reader. So I e-mailed Charlie and asked what he was referring to. The link to Hodge's book all last week (including yesterday) here went to Amazon. I didn't think about that. We'd done the link before Amazon dropped WikiLeaks and, after done, it was just copied and pasted from previous entries over and over because that's easier. At Third, I made a point of asking that we link to Borders and that's where the link in this paragraph goes. We'll attempt to link to Borders from now on. Attempt? I dictate the snapshots. If it's easier for someone to grab a previous link to a book we note often (Deborah Amos' book on the Sunnis, for example), then that's what's going to happen. But in entries I type up, I will try to remember not to link to Amazon. Thanks to Charlie for catching my huge error because I hadn't even thought about it, I was just grabbing an easy copy and paste Saturday to avoid having to search the book. In terms of the comments on the book, I have stated that I liked the book and recommended it. Ava did as well. Ava's backup here. I'm primary. Point, if you're not happy about what was said and I didn't say it and Ava didn't say it, don't bring it to me. Take it to whomever said what made you unhappy. I know the book is a community favorite and will most likely make the year's best list that Martha & Shirley do (remember they want your votes on that no later than December 20th so that they can count all of them up and not be staying up all night writing their piece).
On Third, I said we'd cover Senator Byron Dorgan's remarks there if there wasn't room in Friday's snapshot. There wasn't room and you can refer to Third's "Corruption and waste." A few visitors are asking why we didn't cover Don't Ask, Don't Tell or why we didn't cover the Cat Food Commission? We actually planned to cover the Cat Food Commission and had a photo for it. This wasn't announced and when the writing was going on and on forver, it's something that was kicked to the curb. Don't Ask, Don't Tell? Refer to last week's "Iraq snapshot," "Iraq snapshot," "Senators Scott Brown and Roland Burris (Ava)," "Senate Armed Services Committee," "Where I find time to praise Ben Nelson" and "Senate Armed Services Committee." Ava, Wally, Kat and I covered it. There were other things to cover at Third.
