Rep. Bass Responds To Trump Administration’s Latest Hinderance of U.S. – Cuba Relations
April 17, 2019
Press Release
WASHINGTON
– Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs
Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and
International Organizations, issued the following statement after
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced plans to allow U.S. citizens to
sue businesses using property seized during the 1959 Cuban revolution.
“The Secretary of State’s announcement today was an unfortunate step backwards and will isolate the United States in the Western Hemisphere and put our nation at odds with some of our most important allies. The groups that stand to lose the most from today’s announcement are the Cuban people and American businesses, not the Cuban government. After 60 years of ineffective policy, it was President Obama who began to repair relations and improve the possibility that the United States would finally have a positive relationship with the island just 90 miles south of the United States. As we have learned over the past two years, President Obama’s success is something that the Trump administration seeks to drastically reverse, no matter what the cost, or the hypocrisy. This is a most regrettable development that has already been, and will continue to be, judged harshly by the international community.”
