This decision was about investing in our readers

I'm as excited as the rest of you about InTheseTimes.com going ad-free starting in September.

It may seem counter-intuitive at a time when all of journalism (In These Times included) is facing unprecedented financial challenges, but for us, this decision was about investing in you -- our community of readers.

Every organization has to do the best it can with limited resources, especially when you're as small as In These Times. We decided that we would much rather invest effort into your experience as a reader, rather than spending time chasing after more advertising dollars.

When I close my eyes and envision the future of In These Times, five or ten years down the line, I would much rather get to know twice as many readers like you -- those who share our progressive values and support our journalism -- than see twice as many advertisements, pop-ups and "sponsored" articles. I hope that's a vision you can get behind too.

If you agree, will you make a tax-deductible donation to In These Times today?

From the magazine’s founding in 1976, reader support has been key to its survival. A decade ago, we averaged 1,500 donors a year. But in the past few years we’ve seen explosive growth, and in 2018 we had a record 7,560 donors.

We're going to be pulling out all the stops to try and reach 10,000 supporters by the end of 2020. It's an ambitious goal, but it's what it will take to put In These Times on solid footing for the long haul.

Can we count on you to be one of those 10,000?

Warm regards,

Lauren Kostoglanis
Development Director

P.S. A donation of any amount, no matter the size, will go a long way towards making this shift possible for In These Times. We know that many of our readers have been financially impacted by the Covid-19 crisis, and whether or not you can pitch in today, we are grateful to have you as part of the In These Times community. Stay healthy and stay safe.
