Feminist theory reveals a lot about society. It shows us that our society functions on fiction. The purpose of this fiction is the maintenance of power. This power, however, depends on exploitation and the fiction that maintains it is also exploitative. Exposing the fiction of society is the key to ending the exploitation of people but doing so threatens the power dependent on the fiction. This is the great challenge Shulamith Firestone confronts in "The Dialectic of Sex."
