Eve Ensler and others attempting to draw attention to the need to shut down the holding facilities at Guantanamo Bay

Last night on The Laura Flanders Show, Eve Ensler was one of the guests (V-Day; The Vagina Monologues). Christabel Nsiah-Buadi interviewed Ensler.

Ensler remarked that she "Has been thinking of a way to get more attention to Guantanamo."

V-Day, CODEPINK, MoveOn.org, Amnesty and other groups are currently planning a series of joint actions.

Ensler: "I think it's very clear right now that there is a huge wave of energy and sentiment to shut down Guantamo . . . The call is going to be to do some action or some series of action on July 4 to [advocate that the US] shut down Guantamo."

[Note: This is a very rough transcript. Link to listen is provided near the end.]

Ensler: I've been feeling this for quite some time. and I personally have been working on a new play that's all about torture and the ramifications of torture . . . I spent a lot of reading the torture papers from Guantamo . . . [It's shocking that] one's country is actually participating in the kind of actions that we've known other countries to particpate in and been shocked by their actions. . . . [Guantanomo] is doing not only damage to the United States but it is modeling behavior that will get picked up everywhere. . . People need to know that Americans feel as disturbed by the lack of justice . . . as other people in the world. I think what we need to do is go back to democracy. . . . I think we need to go back to trying people the way we tried them in a democratic system."

These will be actions on or around the Fourth of July to ""reviatlize democracy and revitalize freedom."

As Ensler pointed out, "We are just now apologizing, our Senate, for not outlawing lynching, I don't want to be apologizing for Guantanamo Bay for years to come . . . Guantanamo Bay has become an icon to the globe of U.S. hypocrisy and abuse. It's come to stand for the U.S. doing wrong to Muslim and Arab people. . . . It's about signaling you care and I think signaling you care where you live is the most powerful thing you can do."
