The New Year will see a new team in Lansing, which will be sworn into office on Jan. 1, on the steps of the State Capitol. Detroit Public TV will broadcast and live-stream the ceremony from 11 a.m. to noon that day.
The headliner, of course, is Gretchen Whitmer, who will take the oath of office as Michigan’s 49th governor. She has chosen as her theme for the day, “Building Bridges Together,” which will be necessary as the Democrats who took the four top executive posts in state government in the November election will have to work with a State legislature still controlled by the Republican Party. In her remarks, she is expected to commit her administration to collaborating with a diverse group of stakeholders on the issues most important to Michigan citizens.
Also taking the oath of office will be Lieutenant Governor-elect Garlin Gilchrist II, Secretary of State-elect Jocelyn Benson and Attorney General-elect Dana Nessel, as well as those members of the Michigan Supreme Court, Michigan Court of Appeals, State Board of Education, University of Michigan Board of Regents, Michigan State University Board of Trustees and Wayne State Board of Governors who were elected on Nov. 6.
Besides the swearing-in ceremony, the program will include a parade of flags, an invocation by Rabbi Amy Bigman of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, a 19-Gun Salute by the 119th Field Artillery, a flyover by the Michigan Air National Guard and prayers by Pastor Solomon Kinloch, Jr. of Triumph Church in Detroit and Imam Sheikh Ahmad Hammoud of Islamic Center of America in Dearborn.
DPTV will be providing live coverage of the event on its World Channel (56.4), its One Detroit website and on the One Detroit Facebook page. In conjunction with the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and the Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters, it will make the live-stream available to other media outlets throughout the state.
We offer all our public officials, no matter what their political stripe, our best wishes and our fervent hope that they govern the state wisely and fairly over the coming months.
