WASHINGTON
– Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs
Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement as Mozambique
began a three-day mourning period for the more than 200 people reported
killed by Cyclone Idai.
“My
thoughts are with the hundreds of thousands in Mozambique, Zimbabwe,
and Malawi who have been affected by Cyclone Idai over the past week.
The devastation this storm has caused deserves the attention and support
of the international community to rebuild. I’m encouraged by the level
of humanitarian assistance to the affected countries and fully expect
that the United States Agency for International Development will assist
appropriately.”
