Jorgensen to speak at FLAME rally in Jackson, Miss. to call attention to justice system
UPDATE, 8/7/2020, 7 P.M. CDT: We are sorry to report that Dr. Jo Jorgensen will not be able to attend the campaign rally on Sat. morning, Aug. 8 in Jackson, Miss. On the advice of her doctor, she will be getting a rabies vaccine as a precaution after having been bitten by a bat near the start of this campaign tour. Dr. Jorgensen still has every intention of participating in the FLAME rally, and she will deliver remarks at the #LetHerSpeak rally in Hattiesburg later in the afternoon. The #LetHerSpeak convoy to Hattiesburg is on time, and is scheduled to depart at 2 o’clock, central time.
NASHVILLE, Tenn.; August 7, 2020— Dr. Jo Jorgensen, the Libertarian presidential nominee, will be attending campaign rallies in Jackson and Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and New Orleans, Louisiana this weekend to thank supporters, deliver stump speeches, and participate in a rally in support of incarcerated people and their families.
“We cannot claim to be the Land of the Free, when we lead the world in incarceration. The U.S. has 5 percent of the world population, but we house 20 percent of its prisoners,” said Dr. Jorgensen. “On Day 1 as president, I will start by pardoning and free all nonviolent, victimless federal drug offenders. We’ll release hundreds of thousands of non-violent drug users who are wasting away in prison today. They’ll be able to go home to their families. Crime will go down, making our streets much safer.”
In addition to ending the war on drugs, Dr. Jorgensen’s platform also calls for a Social Security opt-out policy, recalling U.S. military men and women home to defend America’s own shores, and removing government barriers to competition in the energy industry, leading to further innovation in clean-energy technologies such as nuclear power.
Danny Bedwell, chairman of the Libertarian Party of Mississippi, said that Jo Jorgenson’s visit is right on time. “The voters will get to hear a presidential candidate that has a different vision for America,” he said, “a vision that inspires, a vision for peace and prosperity, a vision for economic recovery that does not require draconian or prohibitive laws.”
Bedwell said his party members welcome the message Dr Jorgensen brings. “Her message is one that resonates with families, with industry, and with regular Americans who are just trying to eke out a living.”
The events are part of a 16-day, 20-city campaign bus tour that launched on the first of August.
“From Harrisburg to D.C., from Lexington to last night in Nashville, I’ve been thrilled at people’s enthusiasm for our our campaign for smaller government,” Jorgensen said Wednesday from the road. “They tell me that this year, the older parties’ candidates and their big-government plans for us are just about as unappealing as ever.”
On Monday, the campaign bus will head to Texas, followed by Oklahoma and Missouri.

2 P.M. — Campaign convoy, “Let Her Speak”: start at corner of High St. and N. State St., Jackson
5 P.M.– 5:15 P.M. — Whistle stop in Hattiesburg: 6072 US-98 (Walmart parking lot)
