The long convoy of state and city leaders is on its way up I-75 to the most important annual convening on every policymaker and solution seeker’s calendar – the Mackinac Policy Conference. Starting tomorrow, Mackinac becomes the scene of crucial discussions on the issues confronting Michigan, replacing fudge and horse-drawn carriages as the great attraction on the island.
For the ninth consecutive year, the Detroit Regional Chamber and Detroit Public Television (DPTV) partner to provide not only Michigan residents but the world a seat at the table, through a livestream of virtually every talk and panel during the three-day conference.
DPTV’s One Detroit team of Christy McDonald, Stephen Henderson and Nolan Finley preside over the coverage, providing informative interviews and insightful analysis of topics at the conference.
From tomorrow until Friday, the conference will draw nearly 1,700 of the finest government, academic, business and community thinkers for sessions focused on this year’s three pillars:
Prepare Michigan – Education and Talent
Grow Michigan – Economic Development and Entrepreneurship
Love Michigan – Sustainability and Stewardship
Among this year’s many highlights:
· Wednesday, 4:00 p.m. ET: Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Sandy Baruah, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D) and U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R) engage in a discussion of civility in national politics and the need for preserving the political center.
· Thursday, 10:45 a.m. ET: In a keynote address, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan offers a glimpse into the city’s next steps and major initiatives to spread the current revitalization into the neighborhoods.
· Thursday, 3:25 p.m. ET: Newly elected Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivers a keynote address, sharing her vision for uniting Michigan to work toward a prosperous future. She will then be interviewed by Christy McDonald, managing editor of DPTV’s “One Detroit” weekly program.
Unity and civility are a strong theme in many of the Mackinac presentations. DPTV’s own Nolan Finleyand Stephen Henderson provide an update on the Detroit Civility Project, which they are hosting in partnership with the Detroit Regional Chamber. The goal is to make Detroit a laboratory for civil dialogue, by matching up individuals from different backgrounds for one-on-one conversations during project meetups. They will be explaining the project and interviewing meetup participants at two sessions: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday and 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.

· Thursday, May 30, 7:45 a.m. – ~ 5 p.m. ET
· Friday, May 31, 8:30 a.m. – ~ 11 a.m. ET

- A daily half-hour recap of conference activity Wednesday through Friday at 7:30 p.m. with Christy McDonald,Nolan Finley and Stephen Henderson
- Live and recorded interviews with speakers, conference participants and analysts
