Senator Tammy Baldwin's office issued the following Friday:
02.14.20
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, urging the Secretary to immediately cease efforts to deport Hmong people living in the United States. The letter was co-signed with U.S. Representatives Mark Pocan (WI-02) and Gwen Moore (WI-04).
“There is a long and dark history of human rights violations by the Communist government of Laos against the Hmong and I am deeply concerned that the Trump administration would tear families apart in Wisconsin and target Hmong and Lao refugees residing in our state,” said Senator Baldwin. “Wisconsin has a special bond with the Hmong community and it is my hope that this administration will stop its plan to break this bond with my constituents.”
Baldwin, Pocan and Moore wrote in their letter to Secretary Pompeo, “As Members of Congress from Wisconsin, we are proud to represent many Hmong constituents who are a valued part of our state. We are troubled that you would negotiate with the Laotian government to facilitate returning those who came here fleeing persecution and violence and have been in the United States for years. We strongly urge you to cease efforts to deport Hmong people living in the U.S. immediately.”
