What is Victim Blaming? | Feminism In India

 

“She was asking for it” “She was drunk so she probably doesn’t remember what happened” “Why did she feel the need to go out alone at night anyway?” “I mean her clothes were so not appropriate for stepping out in public” “Why did it take her so long to speak up? That probably means she didn’t mind in the first place” These are just some of the things we hear whenever we speak about gender-based violence. And when those in power say things like 'she shouldn't have gone out at night and this would not have happened' something is very very wrong. A common practice in many circles - this is known as Victim blaming. And today in FII Explains, we’re going to be breaking down 'what exactly is victim blaming and the impact it can have on survivors of gender-based violence.
