Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF)

Starting with this from the CDC:

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is caused by infection with a tick-borne virus (Nairovirus) in the family Bunyaviridae. The disease was first characterized in the Crimea in 1944 and given the name Crimean hemorrhagic fever. It was then later recognized in 1969 as the cause of illness in the Congo, thus resulting in the current name of the disease.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is found in Eastern Europe, particularly in the former Soviet Union, throughout the Mediterranean, in northwestern China, central Asia, southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.

The World Health Organization adds:

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a viral haemorrhagic fever usually transmitted by ticks. It can also be contracted through contact with viraemic animal tissues (animal tissue where the virus has entered the bloodstream) during and immediately post-slaughter of animals. CCHF outbreaks constitute a threat to public health services as the virus can lead to epidemics, has a high case fatality ratio (10-40%), potentially results in hospital and health facility outbreaks, and is difficult to prevent and treat. CCHF is endemic in all of Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and in Asia.

The disease was first described in the Crimea in 1944 and given the name Crimean haemorrhagic fever. In 1969 it was recognized that the pathogen causing Crimean haemorrhagic fever was the same as that responsible for an illness identified in 1956 in the Congo. The linkage of the two place names resulted in the current name for the disease and the virus.

Why are we noting this?  Because Iraqi is currently dealing with it.  Sinan Mahmoud (THE NATIONAL) reports:

Iraq is on high alert after an unusually high number of cases of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, which has killed eight people so far this year.

Authorities said one person died on Friday as cases of the virus spread to the country's north, AFP reported.

The virus, which has a death rate of up to 40 per cent, is primarily transmitted to humans through tick bites or infected livestock, said the World Health Organisation.

Human-to-human transmission can occur as a result of contact with the blood, organs, secretions or other bodily fluids of infected people, the WHO said.

There is no vaccine available for people or animals.

40 cases have been registered in Iraq so far this year with 23 in Dhi QarSymptoms may include:

* fever

*hemorrhage/bleeding

* fatique

* Dizziness

* aches in muscles, bones or joints

* nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

* "bleeding under the skin, in internal organs, or from the mouth, eyes or ears"

* nervous system malfunction

* coma

* delirium

* kidney failure

* liver and respiratory failure

AFP notes that the most recent death was a butcher and "People are generally infected through contact with the blood of infected animals, often after slaughtering livestock."  THE NATIONAL notes that in response the disease, Iraq is spraying crops and livestock.

NYPD Continues to Underreport Use of Stop and Frisk; Severe Racial Disparities Persist

 From the Center for Constitutional Rights:

Contact: press@ccrjustice.org

Stop-and-Frisk Attorneys Respond to Monitor’s Latest Report

May 6, 2022, New York– In response to a report just filed by Mylan Denerstein, the court-appointed monitor in the landmark stop-and-frisk case Floyd v. City of New York, plaintiff attorneys issued the following comments:

“The NYPD cannot solve a problem when it does not understand its scale,” said Omar Farah, senior staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights. “And just like prior reports, this monitor report confirms that widespread underreporting persists, possibly masking significant, ongoing racial disparity in the use of stop-and-frisk on Black and Brown New Yorkers by the NYPD. Until the City corrects this threshold problem, we cannot have confidence that court-ordered reforms are having their intended impact.”

“The latest Monitor Report indicates that, despite all the reform efforts that have been made by the NYPD over the last eight years since the decision, the same problem exists: there is still a racial disparity in who gets stopped. The sad fact is that in the City of New York, eight years after the finding of liability by the court, the NYPD is still engaged in racial profiling in how it conducts stops and frisks,” said co-counsel Jonathan Moore of Beldock Levin Hoffman LLP.

Key findings of the report:

  • The NYPD continues to underreport stops. The underreporting of stops has been acknowledged by the monitor team and explicitly identified in NYPD audits. Any assessment of compliance with the court’s remedial orders will be impossible unless the NYPD finds ways to ensure that unreported stops are no longer a significant issue. If the NYPD’s data is not accurate and complete, the monitor cannot find that the City is in substantial compliance with the Floyd remedial order.
  • Racial disparities remain a prevalent issue. There are still disparities with Black and Latinx New Yorkers when the impact of unreported stops is considered. As the estimate of undocumented stops increased, the estimates for racial disparities also increased.
  • The monitor team’s review of stops indicates that supervisors routinely approved stops, frisks, and searches that the monitor team and the NYPD’s own auditing division determined to be improper. Supervisors need to take an active role in overseeing, managing, and, when necessary, correcting their officers for improper stops.
  • The court has directed the monitor to “prepare an in-depth study on the NYPD’s disciplinary systems, including the efficacy, fairness, and integrity of the City’s policies, practices, and procedures for handling police misconduct during stops.”

In August 2013, the Center for Constitutional Rights and co-counsel won a landmark ruling that found the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk practices to be racially discriminatory and unconstitutional under the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments. The court appointed a monitor to oversee reforms, including a joint remedial process intended to solicit substantive input from directly affected communities and other stakeholders.

The Center for Constitutional Rights works with communities under threat to fight for justice and liberation through litigation, advocacy, and strategic communications. Krystal Ball: Proof Dems are FULL OF SH*T On Roe v Wade

We Won’t Go Back.

Feminist Majority Foundation

Dear Common Ills,

Across the nation outraged women and men are determined not to go back. Ready to march.  Ready to fight.  Most of all—READY TO VOTE.  READY TO HOLD POLITICIANS ACCOUNTABLE.

We must ACT NOW as though the Supreme Court’s decision is final. There’s no question that women’s lives are on the line. That’s why I’m rushing this notice to all supporters of The Feminist Majority.

HERE ARE TWO IMMEDIATE ACTION STEPS ALL OF US MUST TAKE BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.

Urgent Action Step #1.  In advance of the final Court decision and to assure safe and legal abortion nationwide the House has already passed the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA).  It does not guarantee a Constitutional right, but it will keep abortion legal nationwide.  Call or write your Senators and demand immediate action to pass the WHPA in the Senate.  And, if necessary, to break a filibuster to keep abortion legal

At the same time urge your Representative and Senators to pass a Resolution that the Equal Rights Amendment has been ratified.  We Need the ERA more than ever for long-term insurance against the whims of politicians.  The ERA would prevent discrimination on the basis of sex once and for all in the U.S. Constitution. And with the attack on Roe, the ERA is needed more than ever.

Urgent Action Step #2:  At the same time we’re pressing Congress to ensure safe and legal abortion even before the Court decision becomes final, we are mobilizing and organizing for mid-term elections to make sure we maintain Democratic control the House and Senate.

If you ever doubted that a vote for Republicans is a vote to endanger women’s lives, the leaked Supreme Court draft majority decision eliminated any doubt.

It’s crystal clear that today’s Republican party is profoundly anti-choice, anti-women and anti-democracy. if we don’t prepare right now to mobilize and fight like hell to help maintain Democratic control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate everything we’ve fought for over the past 50 years could be lost—beginning with the right to safe, legal abortion.

TOGETHER WE CAN beat these threats and prevail, but only if we organize like never before in the next 180 days to maintain control of the House and Senate.

This means defending all four toss-up Democratic seats and flipping 2 Republican seats for a solid 52-48 majority in the Senate. And holding a net of 4 House seats to maintain the Democrats’ majority.

IGNORE THE DOOMSAYERS

Believe me, we can win.  We’ve done it before – against equally immense odds – because when it comes to advancing women’s rights and equality it’s always been an uphill fight.

So, forget the naysaying of the cable pundits and political consultants who seem all too eager to pronounce a Democratic majority in Congress lost in the November midterms.

Here’s how we win.  And why we will win.

Laser-like focus on key swing races to maintain the pro-women, pro-equality control of Congress.

We’re focusing our grassroots organizing and Get-Out-The-Vote teams on 51 college and university campuses that will determine the all-important young people’s vote. Our massive mobilization in 2018 and again in 2020 posted major wins that helped make the difference in gaining control of Congress.

Laser-like focus on the Youth Vote. Make no mistake young women and men—those immediately affected by an abortion ban—will decide key races that are often decided by only a few percentage points, and this is why we’re focused on key districts and states where young people can have a decisive impact on the outcome.

Just look at these recent and very encouraging poll numbers from the Institute of Politics at Harvard:  37% of voters ages 18-29 say they will definitely be voting in the midterms. In 2018 that number was 36% -- a record-breaking level of turnout for a mid-term election.

EVEN BETTER:  A poll just released two days ago indicates that the threat to Roe is likely to increase turnout and pro-choice voting even more—with half of women voters saying that they are more likely to vote in this year’s elections as a result of increased restrictions on abortion. For young women, 18-29, an even higher 56% say they are more likely to vote.

Women and Young Voters give Dems a big lead in the race for Congress. That same Harvard poll found that 40% of young voters (18-29) want Democrats to hold onto control of Congress, while 28% prefer Republicans. The rest are unsure.

AND….a raft of prominent polls place the Gender Gap for the mid-terms at a WHOPPING  33%.   Usually, it’s between 8% and 11% so this year it’s really a “Gender Canyon” and the Feminist Majority has a 35-year history of widening and winning with the Gender Gap.

To meet the costs of this massive mobilization and organizing effort we need your help.  After you demand action by Congress for the Women’s Health Protection Act and for the ERA, I urge you to be as generous as possible to support our plans.  Your contribution to save women’s lives will be put to work immediately and effectively.

We’re counting on you.

Doing Your Part to Win

This is not the time to sit back thinking “someone else will take care of it.” The stakes have never been higher. Your involvement and action mean more than ever.

May we count on you?

For Victory and Equality,

Ellie Smeal Signature

Stopping World War III and Nuclear Armageddon!

 Francis A, /Boyle:

I have been wracking my brains to come up with some Action that could stop or impede Biden’s Mad Rush Towards Nuclear War with Russia. So far, all I can come up with is this Proposal:

If you could find me one Member of the US House of Representatives to file a Bill of Impeachment against Biden, that would put a shot across his bow and give people something to mobilize behind to prevent this from turning into World War III and Nuclear Armageddon. There would be one Article of Impeachment in this Bill of Impeachment against Biden:

That President Biden has committed a series of non-neutral and belligerent acts against the Russian Federation without the express authorization of the United States Congress in violation of the War Powers Clause of the U.S.  Constitution, Congress’s own 1973 War Powers Resolution, and the 1907 Hague Convention on Neutrality during Land Warfare to which the United States is a contracting power and is thus “the Supreme Law of the Land” under Article VI of the United States Constitution. The Russian Federation and Ukraine are also contracting parties to this 1907 Hague Convention. Fab.

BUSINESS ROUNDUP

Sub-Saharan Africa is set to have its highest inflation rate in over a decade — and businesses are feeling the effects. The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates by more than many people expected. Brazil attempts to increase grain production as global food prices rise. Europe looks to new markets for gas and oil to reduce dependence on Russia. All this and more in today’s Daily Dose business roundup.

– with reporting by Tatira Zwinoira from Harare, Zimbabwe

Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa To Have Its Worst Inflation Since 2008

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to surging global oil and food prices and the International Monetary Fund has announced that sub-Saharan Africa’s inflation rate increased by nearly 4 percentage points to 12.2% due to the invasion. Higher prices will “erode living standards quite a bit in many countries,” said IMF’s Africa Director Abebe Aemro Selassie at the just-ended spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington, D.C.

Small businesses are already feeling the pain.

“When inflation hit, most of our clients — some who had been with us long — started to cut down from spending maybe from ZAR10,000 ($632.39) to ZAR1,000 ($63.24) as things like cooking oil and fuel were going up,” said Malesela Rachel Ouma Tema, owner of the small South African clothing company Plus Fab, in a comment provided to OZY. The company has been operating for ten years and receives orders from the British Caribbean, the U.K., the U.S., Nigeria, Ghana, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Swaziland.

“We are a fashion business, so not a priority for most,” said Tema. “We have had to retrench a lot of our workers and take pay cuts by as much as half — so inflation has really been hitting our business.” According to the IMF, sub-Saharan Africa’s two largest economies, South Africa and Nigeria, will see decelerated growth this year. In Nigeria, inflation and global uncertainty around oil prices have combined with rising security risks and low vaccination rates to hold down economic growth.

Zimbabwe President Imitates Putin’s Ruble-Rescue Strategy

The Zimbabwe dollar (ZWL) is depreciating rapidly, signaling a lack of confidence in the currency.

According to official data from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the U.S. dollar currently is trading at ZWL166 — but in the country’s parallel foreign exchange market, it’s ZWL400 on the dollar, indicating that the government is attempting to prop up its currency. And now Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa has revealed plans to adopt Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent strategy to save the ruble, by requiring international purchases of Zimbabwean natural resources to be made in local currency. Thus, in Zimbabwe, “any investor that comes in here must buy using the Zimbabwean dollar,” Mnangagwa said. (Source: Bloomberg)

U.S. Markets Warn Of Volatile Economy

As the U.S. experiences its worst inflation in decades, businesses are reporting reduced consumer demand. Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc says cigarette smokers are trading down for cheaper brands, while Sleep Number and Tempur Sealy International have announced falling demand for mattresses — a common big-ticket item. Last week, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that gross domestic product dropped 1.4% on an annualized basis in the first quarter of 2022. U.S. Fed Attacks Inflation

The Fed’s action this week to raise interest rates by .5% — instead of the usual .25% — was an attempt to dry up liquidity and curb rising price levels, but has also sparked market turbulence. President Biden is under pressure to curtail U.S. inflation, which reached 8.5% by March: the highest rate since 1981. (Sources: BloombergThe EconomistThe New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal)

Has Brazil Found A Solution To Rising Global Food Prices?

With global food prices surging due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, South America has struggled. In a continent that relies heavily on wheat, corn and fertilizers, Brazil may have found the answer. According to The Economist, agricultural techniques that combine crops and livestock with forestry practices can make a farm five times more productive than the current average across Brazilian agriculture. At present, however, such techniques are used on only about 5% of the country’s farmland. (Sources: BloombergThe EconomistThe Wall Street Journal)

EU Responds To “Petro For Rubles”

Moscow has demanded that European buyers pay for its oil and gas in Russian rubles, as President Vladimir Putin seeks to stabilize a currency hard hit by economic sanctions. In response, EU energy ministers have proposed banning the purchase of Russian crude oil and gas while seeking alternative energy sources. “We are also pushing within the EU to now phase out oil together,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told public broadcaster ARD. EU Regulators Accuse Apple Of Breaking Antitrust Laws

On Monday the EU accused Apple of breaching antitrust laws, charging that the company is not allowing other mobile app payment methods on its iOS platform — which effectively forces consumers to use its own Apple Pay. “Apple has built a closed ecosystem around its devices and its operating system,” said EU Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager, the bloc’s competition commissioner. Apple, however, denies that it is blocking competitors. (Sources: The Wall Street JournalBloombergThe New York TimesThe Financial Times)

Singapore’s Prime Minister Predicts Global Recession In Two Years

Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, has told the country to brace for more economic challenges, pointing to high global inflation rates and tightening monetary policies.
