Rep. Susan Davis Votes to Protect Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status, and Deferred Enforced Departure Immigrants

US House Rep Susan Davis' office issued the following earlier this week:

Washington, June 4, 2019

U.S. Rep. Susan Davis (CA-53) voted to protect millions of immigrants who have lived much of their lives in the United States and are contributing to our country in immeasurable ways. The American Dream and Promise Act (H.R. 6) extends protection to those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED).

“These immigrants are American in every way except on paper,” said Davis, an original cosponsor of H.R. 6. “Many of them have only known America as their home and make incredible contributions to our businesses and economy, technology and research, and our security and society. It’s time we lift the uncertainty of deportation hanging over them.”

The American Dream and Promise Act would provide a path to lawful permanent residence status - and eventual citizenship - for Dreamers who meet certain conditions including either completing higher education, serving in the military, or holding a job. It would create a path to lawful permanent residence status - and eventual citizenship - for TPS and DED holders.

The actions of the Trump Administration have created an urgent need for this legislation.  The Administration has thrown the lives of Dreamers and TPS and DED recipients into a state of limbo by taking actions to end DACA and most TPS and DED designations.

In September 2017, President Trump moved to terminate the DACA program and has also acted to terminate TPS and DED for most populations. Despite these terminations, court injunctions have permitted Dreamers, TPS holders, and DED holders to continue to renew their status, and yet this could change at any time.  As a result, Dreamers, TPS holders, and DED holders now live with great fear and uncertainty, under the threat of possible deportation.
