  • OTD in 1814, English novelist, Ellen Price was born. Better known as Mrs. Henry Wood, she wrote over 30 novels. She is best remembered for her novel, "East Lynne", which has an elaborate & implausible plot & is centered on infidelity & double identities.
  • OTD in 1933, writer, critic & political activist, Susan Sontag was born. Sontag's work analyzed conflict; she wrote about Vietnam War & the Siege of Sarajevo. She also wrote extensively about photography, culture and media, AIDS & illness & human rights.
  • OTD in 1860, social reformer & criminologist, Katharine Bement Davis was born. Davis was the 1st woman to head a major New York City agency when she was appointed Correction Commissioner. She is remembered for her science-based prison reform.
  • OTD in 1878, Canadian nurse & teacher, Isabel Maitland Stewart was born. Stewart was the founder of the Winnipeg General Hospital Nursing Alumnae & helped establish "The Standard Curriculum for Schools of Nursing", focusing on hands-on learning.

  • OTD in 1923, Polish-Swiss psychologist, psychoanalyst & philosopher, Alice Miller was born. Miller is noted for her books on parental child abuse & how it impacts society as a whole. Her work was popular & translated into several languages.
  • OTD in 1936, blues and boogie-woogie pianist and singer, Katie Webster was born. Webster was known as the "Swamp Boogie Queen" & was a mainstay of Gulf Coast rhythm-and-blues recordings in 50's-60's & famous touring artist in the 80's-90's.
  • OTD in 1915, American novelist, Cynthia Freeman was born. Freeman specialized in multi-generational stories of Jewish families, centering on woman protagonists. Her novel, "No Time For Tears", was a bestseller.
