Moqtada ordered the assault

XINHUA reports:

In Iraq, 1,614 new COVID-19 cases were detected during the past 24 hours, bringing the total nationwide infections to 550,435.

The death toll from the coronavirus in Iraq rose to 12,224 after 24 fatalities were added, while the total recoveries increased to 480,903 as 2,366 more patients recovered.

In the meantime, Riyadh Abdul-Amir, head of Iraqi Health Ministry's Public Health Department, told the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) that Iraq is currently the 20th in the global ranking of coronavirus infections after once the 11th.

"It is not possible to judge at this time that the pandemic has receded, especially as we are in winter, when infections are likely to increase. But if the decline of infections continues until the end of the winter, that will be an indication of the pandemic's receding," INA quoted Abdul-Amir as saying.

COVID is on the rise around the world.  Picking up with the topic of "Moqtada al-Sadr sicks his cult on innocent protesters -- dozens injured, six dead," Dilan S. Hussein (RUDAW) reports:

Protesters in the city’s Habboubi Square were reportedly forced out of their tents and shot at by Sadr supporters, leaving at least seven people dead and scores wounded in a city which has significant bloodshed since demonstrations began last October.

"Sadrists armed with guns and pistols came to try to clear our tents. We fear that more violence could take place," Mohammad al-Khayyat, a leader of the anti-government movement told AFP.

As noted last time, the assault was planned -- Moqtada's thugs carried props an loaded guns.  Hussein reveals that Moqtada told his cult to "clean up the 'atheism' that he said had taken over the city's streets" before sending them out on Friday.

This was clearly a planned attack, it was a hate crime and Moqtada needs to be prosecuted. And after his cult killed people?  "He then took to Twitter on Friday to thank his supporters for mobilizing."

THE BAGDAD POST points out, "The UN representative, embassies of the United States and the UK have condemned the violence and urged the Iraqi government to take immediate action to protect the peaceful protesters."  Only after various governments began speaking out about what happened did Moqtada back off from his praise.  The death toll has now risen to 16.  When will charges be brought against Moqtada?
