Calls for a female CJI and other top headlines | Weekly Feminist News Wrap

Here’s your wrap of news for the week gone by!

A recent UN report said that nearly half the women in 57 developing countries around the world face restrictions on what they can do with their bodies, such as have sex, use contraception or seek health care. The study titled "My Body is My Own" looks at the societal attacks on women in the countries, ranging from rape to forced sterilization to virginity tests and genital mutilation. It listed 43 countries that do not have laws governing marital rapes. The study pointed out that only 71 percent of countries guarantee access to overall maternity care, while only 75 percent ensure full, equal access to contraception. Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said on Thursday that High Court Chief Justices have often been informed that women lawyers refrain from taking up judgeship offers citing domestic and parental responsibilities. Bobde said that the time has come for India to have a woman Chief Justice. Representing the Women Lawyers' Association, lawyers Sneha Khalita and Shoba Gupta argued that only only 11% of the total judges in India are women. It was pointed out that of 25 High Courts in the country, only Telangana High Court has a woman Chief Justice. Moreover, in five High Courts: Manipur, Meghalaya, Patna, Tripura and Uttarakhand, there is not even a single woman judge. As per a recent report by Traced, a mobile security app, stalkers and cyberattackers are using WhatsApp Online Status Tracker websites and apps to stalk users and get access to their personal information, especially women. The study also revealed that these trackers can also find out who is texting whom without the information of the users. Moreover, WhatsApp cannot prevent these apps from monitoring its users because it currently has no settings to do so. Ever since WhatsApp updated it's privacy policy, concerns are rising among users, with many having shifted to Telegram and Signal. A plea was filed before the Supreme Court by the Child Rights Trust and a Bengaluru resident, seeking directions for the protection of the fundamental rights of migrant children amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. In this plea, a bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian asked all states to inform it about the number of such children within their territories, and update it about their condition. It was further noted that the pandemic has a discriminatory impact on migrant children and has aggravated their vulnerabilities. A woman will be at the helm of news agency Reuters for the first time in it’s 170 years of existence. The news giant announced this week that Alessandra Galloni has become the first woman Editor-in-chief of the news service. Galloni has served as the global managing editor at Reuters since 2015. Before this, Galloni was with the Wall Street Journal. "For 170 years, Reuters has set the standard for independent, trusted and global reporting," she said in a statement.
