They also reflect on the completion of the evacuation effort, which involved coordination with the Taliban. Ann is a retired U.S. Army colonel and State Department diplomat who was part of the small team that reopened the U.S. embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan in December 2001. She eventually resigned in protest against the Iraq War. Matthew served in the Marine Corps in the Iraq War and later worked for the State Department. He resigned from the State Department in protest against the Afghanistan War in 2009. Ann and Matthew respond to some of the establishment news propaganda on the withdrawal from Afghanistan—from generals to think tankers to war correspondents. Later, Ann comments on what the CIA was up to during the withdrawal, as well as the impact sanctions will have on the people of Afghanistan.
