Dalit youth tonsured in Jabalpur and other top headlines | Weekly Feminist Newswrap

Here’s your wrap of news for the week gone by: Four persons have been arrested in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur district for reportedly tonsuring and parading a Dalit youth with a garland of shoes around his neck for falling in love with an upper caste woman. According to the police, Rajkumar Dehria filed a complaint against the relatives of the woman with whom he had fallen in love. Khamaria in his complaint also said that a video of the entire incident was recorded by the accused and shared on several social media platforms. All the accused have been booked under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989 and several sections of the Indian Penal Code. A woman’s extra-marital affair is not grounds to deny the custody of her child in a matrimonial dispute, as it cannot be concluded that she will not be a good mother, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has held. The court also noted that in a patriarchal society, it is fairly common to cast aspersions on the moral character of a woman and more often than not these allegations are made without any basis. The order came following a habeas corpus petition filed by a woman from Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district, seeking custody of her four-and half-year-old daughter from her estranged husband who is an Australian citizen. A recent survey conducted by the Women Development and Child Welfare department has identified a total of 143 children who have been orphaned by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 30 children lost both parents to the pandemic, while the remaining lost the single parent they had been left with after the death of another. Details about children left with single parents are being collected. The survey, conducted on the directions of the Supreme Court, had gathered information from the ground through Anganwadi teachers in every habitation. India’s younger workforce was the worst hit by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21, payroll data from the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) showed. Those aged 25 years or below were among the most affected, with many who lost their jobs during the worst months of the pandemic unable to find employment. Data for the fiscal 2020-21 showed that there was a fall in the net payrolls for three age categories — under 18, 18-21 and 22-25, on a year-on-year basis as compared to the relatively older age groups. Kerala has retained the top rank in NITI Aayog's Sustainable Development Goals India Index 2020-21, while Bihar has been adjudged as the worst performer, according to a report released today. The Index for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) evaluates progress of states and union territories on social, economic and environmental parameters. Kerala retained its rank as the top state with a score of 75. Both Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu took the second spot with a score of 74. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Follow Feminism In India: Website: https://www.feminisminindia.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/feminisminindia Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/feminisminindia Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/feminismini...
